Android Technology Comes To The Four Wheelers!

2011-Saab-9-5-SportCombi

Everywhere I look, the Android bug seems to have bitten most folks with more and more smartphones featuring Google’s Android open source operating system. Swedish automaker sSaab will be amongst the first automakers to usher in the Android OS technology to automobiles by developing the IQon car infotainment system that will soon be seen in production Saab cars. The iQon infotainment system will not just deliver users vehicle information from a raft of sensors numbering over 500 from across every sphere of the Car’s dynamics, but will also serve as an entertainment and internet connectivity platform.

The iQon system’s open source design, which Saab will throw open to developers means that future Saab car owners will have the flexibility to choose from a plethora of third party Apps that might enable them to do a lot more with their cars. Saab obviously will need to ensure that the iQon system will be robust enough to not allow critical car dynamics and safety systems to be modified. Any which ways, Saab has kick started the Android revolution on cars and it is only a matter o time before other automakers join the bandwagon. So, finally you won’t be stuck with a car infotainment system that gets older with your Saab car. Rather, the Android iQon can be upgraded and enhanced periodically. Meanwhile, here’s a little video about Saab’s iQon infotainment system.
